17th Century carved stone lintel going in above the larder door in the new kitchen. Using bits and bobs accumulated over many years, the fruits of senseless demolition and crimes against our built environment. For those who enjoy a bit of virtue signalling, wall insulation almost to Passifhaus standards.
Do your own thing.

In Hampshire yesterday for a funeral sadly but managed to sneak a visit to Winchester Cathedral which I haven’t visited for 25 years when in a former life I visited clients in Winchester Prison.
The early 13th Century Choir Stalls believed to be carved by the Norfolk master carpenter, William of Lyngwode.
Quite took my breath away.

Cats and dogs;
Pietra Dura and Pietra Paesina in which the Alberese Limestone from Tuscany, around Florence was used so that it’s natural fissures and deposits formed landscapes and trees. Here they have been inlaid with hard stones and marbles to represent scenes from the Tuscan landscape.
Mounted in a Baroque gilt bronze and Ebony Cabinet and all dating from the late 17th/ early 18th Century.
A rural idyl captured in stone that will never fade.

Travelling to the Olympia Antiques Fair with me today is this beautifully drawn Pollard Oak Zoomorphic Centre Table by Robert Strahan of Dublin. One of the most successful Dublin Cabinet Makers of the 19th Century. Designing and manufacturing for the Office of Public Works they were commissioned to design and manufacture for some of the great Irish country houses such as Doneraile Court, Co. Cork and Lisnavagh, Co. Carlow.
Sometimes pedestrian, sometimes excessive and as here, sometimes genius. Here plainly drawing on designs by Pugin and Bridgens and perhaps referencing the famous ‘Sea Dog Table’ at Hardwick Hall.
Excellent colour and stamped by the maker. Circa 1840.

I will be exhibiting at the Olympia Art and Antiques Fair next week. My invitations having just arrived I am unlikely to get many posted out so please let me know if you would like one leaving on the door including Preview Tickets for the strike free 22nd June.
Stand E18 where such words as ‘eclectic’ and ‘curated’ will not be used but there will be some rather wonderful things.

Shrigley and Hunt of Lancaster were one of the foremost strained glass designers in England in the late 19th century, rivalling other leading producers such as William Morris &Co. and James Powell of Whitefriars.
These two rather lovely panels decorated with their monogram were removed from their offices in Lancaster when they closed in 1982. Probably designed by Carl Almquist 1848-1924), or Edward Holmes Jewitt (1849-1929) who developed designs influenced by those of both William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. They worked with the leading architects of their time, G F Bodley, Alfred Waterhouse Richard Norman Shaw and of course Paley and Austin.

Bought today. A splendid pair of carved wood (entirely) Door Cases with the quality of the Irish Carvers work visible beneath the grime and layers of old paint. From 1773-1777 when Castle Archdale was rebuilt on the banks of lower Lough Erne. The architect is unknown but it was the largest Palladian house in Co. Fermanagh. Sadly left to fall into ruin after wartime requisition by the RAF it was demolished in 1970.
The carving of these are a powerful testament to the quality of those lost interiors. As always a bittersweet acquisition. Oh tempora, o mores.

The Advowson Stone. SOLD
A very fine and large (45 x 24 inches) English carved Limestone Overmantle from the first half of the 16th Century, depicting a scene from the story of Susanna and the Elders from the Book of Daniel.
The carving of fine quality and typically of Tudor decorative panels, the design derived from contemporary Flemish Woodcuts or Engravings.
Until the 1980’s this had resided for centuries at Advowson House in Frampton-on-Severn from where it had been sold prior to the Heritage England listing in 1986 but is still recorded; ‘set into the rear wall was a finely carved C16th stone panel depicting Susannah and the Elders, and referred to as the ‘Advowson Stone’.
The quality of this piece strongly suggests that it had started life elsewhere, possibly in a pre Georgian iteration of Frampton Court of glorious gothick Orangery fame.
The quality of this piece reminds us of the great quality of craftsmanship carried out for the Court and those associated with it in the 16th Century.

Fretwork Friday. Poor photographs of a very pleasing and well mannered Side Table in Mahogany with an untouched crusty patina. Interestingly most likely a piece of 18th Century Gillows, not just by its quality or slightly provincial feel. The blind fret is to a Gillows’ pattern and the water gilt handles are recorded as being used on furniture by the firm in the 1760’s. A piece dated to 1763 is illustrated in Susan Stewart’s book. Dry and with the original leather covered castors.

Book matched veneers or what? A delightful Walnut veneered Jardiniere of unusual design. With a lid quarter veneered on both sides and a leaf carved handle and standing on tendril carved feet. Original carrying handles. Very solidly made. I’ve never seen it’s like. I do think I need to say that it’s a superb colour and beautifully made. Early 19th Century I think though possibly earlier. 15 inches high and deep, 18 inches wide. (38 x 47).

It’s BADA week and of course I had all sorts of wonderful things planned to compliment the marvellous exhibitions and lectures that fellow members are doing.
Typically, of course I haven’t had time and nothing I was hoping to do can now be done.
However, I shall have a go at posting some recent purchases, all from private collections and non of it previously seen on the internet.
‘Reason not the need’.
To kick off a very large carved and gilded heraldic stag from the 18th Century. It has a curved back and I’m not quite sure to what it was originally attached. I can’t help but be reminded of the Babycham advertisement of my youth which is unworthy of a truly lovely thing kept for many years by a now gone larger than life friend and dealer.

A rare if a slightly odd survival with distinguished provenance. A late 18th Century Commode Armchair formerly the property of one of Yorkshire’s greatest sons, the celebrated architect John Carr ‘of York’, with its original silk moire upholstery intact. Veneered in finely figured Mahogany and with its original fittings, probably made by one of the leading Northern Cabinet Makers of the period.

Real Country House kit from Gillows of Lancaster. A George IV substantial 2 tier Stand or ‘Dumb Waiter’ in finely figured Mahogany of typical Gillows quality.
Stamped ‘Gillows-Lancaster’ and also by ‘A Soloman 59 Gt Queen Street’. Soloman was an early ‘furniture broker’ and operated from Great Queen Street between 1830-40. (Gilbert).
Gillows first produced this design in 1803 for Le Genre Starkie at Huntroyde be Padiham (Estimate Sketch Book). Another appears in the ‘Estimates’ of 1819. Whilst Stands of this form are often attributed to Gillows it is rare to find one bearing their stamp.

(Yet another) present to self. I remember coveting Adam’s drawing for this many years ago when it appeared in Christie’s from Edward Croft Murray’s collection. It made £50,000 or so back then and was beyond me. The large engraving from The Works in Architecture of Robert and James Adam 1777, Vol II part I plate V dill suffice.
The house was demolished in 1862 and most of the interiors were destroyed. This was perhaps one of Robert Adams’ finest interiors.
Adam himself wrote of his Third and Great Withdrawing Room: 'The ornaments of the ceiling and entablature are chiefly stucco, gilt, with a mixture of paintings. The frames for glasses, the pedestals and vases in the niches, and the girandoles on the piers, are of wood gilt. This room is hung with satin, and is undoubtedly one of the most elegant in Europe, whether we consider the variety of the richness or the decoration'.

A beautiful blue sky and sunny day in the grim North and my morning walk enriched by the first call of the Curlew, the harbinger of Spring.
Golden in the sunshine are a set of 14 (12 & 2) Gothic Revival carved Oak Dining Chairs. The carved backs with cluster columns to a design by George Smith but these date from Circa 1830. A lovely thing to have bought , sold and delivered to one of my favorite customers this week. A rare and remarkably untouched George I Walnut Bachelor Chest. Wonderful colour and patina, it just glows on the dullest of days. A good untouched veneered interior to the top, lovely fine Oak linings and book matched ends.
Because they were always a ‘must have’ for serious collectors, early Walnut Bachelor Chests are possibly the most over restored, cleaned off, ‘improved’ and faked up pieces of Antique Furniture. It’s a real joy to handle one so honest.

The Monument at Whitley Beaumont near Huddersfield. Particularly fantastic because no one knows why it was given that name or what it might have been a monument to. Probably built circa 1820 out of bits and pieces retrieved from alterations to the house.
I have been collecting bits and pieces for a Monument for some years and inspired by recent events it seems the right time to embark upon building a Folly. This at Whitley Beaumont pictured with members of the Beaumont family who owned the estate from the 13th Century until 1924. Fittings were sold at Auction in 1916/17 and a room was with Roberson’s of Knightsbridge by 1921.
The magnificent Saloon was by James Paine and dated from 1752 and the Park was landscaped by Lancelot Brown in the 1770’s.
Demolished in 1950 and the Park used for mining.
All gone bar a now roofless Summer House possibly also by Paine.

A George II period carved Virginia Walnut Desk on Stand of unusual form. Well drawn and finely carved yet made in the solid pointing to very skilled but provincial origins. The secondary woods are unusual in a piece of English furniture and suggest possibly an American origin but possibly Irish.
Whatever it’s origins it is a very handsome and masculine piece of furniture produced by a skilled workshop and probably employing specialist carvers.
Elements are very reminiscent of the work of Giles Grendy but it is not by him.
A rare and rather beautiful quandary.
Circa 1730 but if American then some years later. There are the remains of 18th Century Wallpaper behind the cupboard and pigeon holes which should help in identifying the origins.

It is been a bit of a year for rediscoveries, for buying things which escaped me years ago.
I grew up with this very large William and Mary Box. It was in my Uncle’s (Paul Smith the well known Ludlow Dealer) Collection. It sat on a Kist on a landing by the bedroom in which my sister and I stayed when visiting. It is amongst my earliest visual memories of old stuff. My Aunt did a little decluttering and put it in a sale in 2016 when it made £11,000. Too rich for me. I bought it back this week for rather less. Absolutely delighted. Very resonant of my youth and some slightly eccentric ‘influencers’. I imagine the Louis XIV gilt bronze feet were added by Paul 60 or more years ago, but maybe not.
My parents once irresponsibly left me with Paul for a day at the age of 3 and playing in his workshop I managed to drop a drill through my foot that pinned me to the floor! I still bear the scar.

A rather amazing and very large late 17th Century or early 18th Century French Architectural Model. Conceived in the Baroque style popularised by architects such as Philibert Le Roy and Francois Mansard under Louis XIII and developed throughout the second half of the 17th Century.
Carved wood and polychrome. The Fleur-de-lis which punctuate the facade should help in identification but so far research has not led to any firm identification of the building. It has more of a feel of an ‘hôtel particulier’ than a Chateau.

With a paneled lid above 2 faux drawers, standing on a base with one long and two short drawers above wonderfully chunky short cabriole legs and rather rudimentary ‘Pied de Biche’ (as we say in the BADA) or hoof feet.
A really pleasingly drawn piece of vernacular furniture with a colour and patina so typical of Welsh Oak and hard to beat. The contemporary inlaid initials presumably to celebrate a marriage.

Yesterday’s post was Audubon and American ‘Virginia’ Walnut. Coincidentally these finely drawn and carved details grace a very rare Black (Virginia) Walnut American (probably Philadelphia) mid 18th Century piece of Case furniture which I discovered recently and which will be available next week. Hopefully.

‘American Crow’ from the First Double Elephant Folio, of John Audubon’s ‘The Birds of America’, perhaps the finest Ornithological Works ever printed. Aquatint by Robert Havell 1833.
The tree featured is of course Juglans Nigra, the Virginia Walnut much employed by English Cabinetmakers in the early and mid 18th Century.
It is interesting to note that John Evelyn in ‘a discourse on forest trees and the propagation of timber in his Majesty’s dominions’ (a paper delivered to the Royal Society in 1662), noted that amongst many benefits of Walnut from the Americas was that ‘a distillation of its leaves with honey and urine, makes hair spring on bald heads’. Food for thought for some of us.
The bottom of the plate slightly trimmed.
Ex Roger Baynton-Williams.

The Overmantle from a George II Carved and Panelled Room, designed by the great son of York, John Carr. Circa 1750. Originally stone/ old white and the carved details gilded. Showing the carved modillion cornice.
A recent present to myself and soon (it’s all relative my friends, no sniggering) to be conserved and installed at home with help from @edward_bulmer and @dickinsons_of_gargrave and @katetempest75 if she’s game.
The small bit of scraping took me ages. Don’t know how people do it. Of course if there is another lockdown I’m sure I can do all 2500 sq feet of it.

IMP.CAES.DOMITIANO.AUG.COS.VII.
Serendipity. This very substantial and documentary Romano/ British Lead Pig which I purchased the other day came to my notice during some idle bath time catalogue reading. Cast in AD 81 (the inscription reveals that it was made in the 7th Consulate of the Emperor Domitian) and from lead mined in the ancient workings in Wharfedale around Grassington in North Yorkshire, it and another were found in a peat bog on Heyshaw Moor (nr Pateley Bridge) in 1731. The ingot is inscribed ‘Brig’ on the side, identifying it as coming from the lands of the Brigantes.
The mineral resources of Britain were an important asset to the Roman Empire and lead from Yorkshire was used to line the aqueducts throughout the Roman world. This was mined at a very turbulent time in the Roman occupation of Britain.
It was part of the collection at Ripley Castle from 1731 until recently. The other found with it has been in the British Museum since 1772.
Weighing in at 69.9 Kilos.
Fantastic to be bringing this back to Yorkshire. It reminds me why I love this business.
It also reminds us that the Romans had not travelled to Yorkshire simply for the Weather.

Great to be with Captain Sir Tom Moore, perhaps the greatest living Yorkshireman on Yorkshire Day. He’s been staying in Craven at the Coniston Hotel, inspiring Children, Frontline Workers, and all of us in the local community with his message of hope.
Truly uplifting and a reminder of what is the best in all of us.

£150 to a Charity of your choice if you can tell me the identity of this house designed by Thomas Harrison of Chester (1744-1829). I have had these drawings kicking about for years and have only just realised that they are by the highly accomplished Thomas Harrison, who despite being very satisfied to be a provincial architect is seen as one of the most influential proponents of the Greek Revival. Giles Worsley describes him as "the first English architect to grasp the full potential of the Greek Revival”. #architecture#design#greekrevival#neoclassical#thomasharrison#chester#northcountry#countryhouse
A bit of sisterly enforced tidying up today turned up this bit of Gibside which I haven’t seen for over 20 years. From the long ruined County Durham seat of the Bowes Lyons, Earls of Strathmore, the family of the late Queen Mother. Probably part of the 1760’s improvements by James Paine and part of my youthful ‘Ruin Snooping’. Must find all those other bits I rescued along the way.
